Gerontology

The Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Gerontology at the Catholic University of Brasília (UCB) is one of the references in the training of human resources in the field of human agingin the Brazilian Central-West and Northern regions. Since its creation in 2003, it has trained professionals from different areas of knowledge to work in higher education institutions, public services, institutions and services for older adults. The Program wants to contribute to the social, economic and systemic challenges imposed by the accelerated process of population aging in the 21st century, which require well-trained human resources that guarantee that aging and old age are assisted and guided processes.

The Program has an interdisciplinary team of teachers and partnerships with national and international researchers. It belongs to the Network of Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Programs on Aging (REPRINTE) in Brazil and the Red Interuniversitaria de Envejecimento Saudablein Latin America. It has academic collaborations with several universities and research centers.

The Program's Area of Concentrationis Longevity and Quality of Life, connecting actions and knowledge related to the physical, biological, psychological, social and cultural dimensions of aging and the old age.

Population Aging

The world's population is aging rapidly due to increased longevity, caused by the development of science and technology, associated with a decrease in birth and fertility rates. Currently, throughout the world, older adults are the fastest growing population, especially those over 80 years of age (long-lived), requiring great attention and efficient social security and health services.

The rapid increase in the number of older adults Brazilians is, due to its causes and consequences, one of the most important demographic changes presented by our population in the second half of the 20th century. The average life expectancy of Brazilians, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), is 75.8 years. The perspective is that by 2025 we will have the 6th largest elderly population in the world, with approximately 32 million, making up 15% of the total population. IBGE estimates also indicate that the proportion of older adults to young people in the Federal District in 2060 will be the second highest among the 27 units of the Federation, with around two to one, leading to an increase in the life expectancy of men and women, respectively, from 74.94 to 81.96 years old and from 79.53 to 85.65.

‍

‍What is Gerontology?

Gerontology is an area of knowledge whose object is the study of the characteristics of old age as a phase of human development, as well as the process and determinants of aging. The name was coined by Metchnicoff, in 1903, who combined the Greek words gero = old/worthy, and logy = study/science. It is a broad field of interdisciplinary nature, aimed at describing the typical changes in the aging process and its genetic-biological, psychological, and sociocultural determinants. It is also focused on studying the characteristics of older adults, as well as the various experiences of old age and aging occurring in different sociocultural and historical contexts. Gerontology covers aspects of normal and pathological aging, as well as considering current levels of development and potential for development.

The main objectives of Gerontology are to characterize the evolutionary changes that are typical of old age, to describe the possibilities of variation between individuals and groups that age in different times and historical-social contexts and to identify the factors associated with these changes.

Assessment

The Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Gerontology at UCB had its Master's degree recognized by Ministerial Ordinance No. 4,419 of 12/30/2004; and the Doctorate was approved by the Technical and Scientific Council (CTC) of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). From then on, the Program offers training within the scope of Higher Education in Masters and Doctorate in Gerontology.

The Program received a score of 4 in the CAPES assessment in the last four years 2017/2020 and has the potential to intensify collaborations, projects, partnerships, and publications.

The Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Gerontology at UCB aims to offer interdisciplinary academic training, enabling professionals to produce and use knowledge in Gerontology, with a view to improving the quality of life and longevity of the older adult’s population.

Monique Karen Teles Muniz
